Accommodation
Nepal has every category of accommodation facilities.
These range from the international standard star hotels to budget
hotels and lodges. In order to have an assured quality service, it
is advisable to use the facilities and services of government registered
hotels, lodges, travel agencies and licensed tour guides only and
engage an authorized trekking guide or porter only through a registered
travel / trekking agency. We also have licensed guides who can speak
other international languages for the convenience of tourists. To
have quality service it is recommended to arrange the sightseeing
programs only through the government registered travel agencies.
Hospitals and Drug Stores
The hospitals, drug houses, dispensaries and pharmaceutical
shops of Kathmandu sell all kinds of medicines, including those
imported from overseas. The major general hospitals and private
clinics are available in Kathmandu Valley.
Veterinary Services
For all veterinary needs there are excellent veterinary
hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley.
Postal Services
The Central Post Office is located near Dharahara Tower.
The counters are open from (7 A.M. to 4 P.M.), Monday through Friday
and provide stamps, postcards and aerograms. Post Restante is available
Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Express Mail Service
(EMS) is available at GPO and at Thamel, Basantapur and airport
postal counters
Telephone Services
Telephone, fax, telex and telegraph services are available
at the Nepal Telecommunications Corporation at Tripureshwar. All
hotels and private communications centers provide international
and domestic telephone call service. For calling from outside, country
code for Nepal is 977 and the area code for Kathmandu is 1.
Internet Services
Several Internet cafes and communication centers have opened
up in the Valley and around the country in the past few years. Visitors
only have to find a place they are most comfortable in to use the
facilities to keep in touch with home. E-mail and Internet services
are also offered by hotels. .
Banks
Banks are open between 09:30 A.M. to 2:30 P M. from Sunday to Friday
in the Kathmandu Valley. They are closed on Saturdays and other
holidays. ATM Machine is located in major places of Kathmandu like
Kantipath, Thamel, New Baneswor, New Road, Pulchowk etc.
In other places banks are open from 10:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. from
Sunday to Friday and are closed on Saturday and government holidays.
Entertainment
There are many types of entertainment in the city of Kathmandu.
These include theatrical shows including classical and light performances,
casinos and discos. The cinema halls in Kathmandu screen Nepali,
Indian, English and other regional movies. There are private art
galleries and a national art gallery called NAFA in Kathmandu which
exhibit and sells all sorts of modern and traditional paintings.

Shopping
Shopping can be very rewarding and exciting in Kathmandu. There
are numerous tourist shops on the main streets and in the hotel
arcades brimming with tempting jewelry, statues and other typical
Nepalese handicraft. Thangka is one of the best buys in Nepal. Each
place has its speciality product which is unique. Bhaktapur, for
instance, is the place to buy pottery. The Traditional Craftsman's
Colony in Patan is a famous centre for Nepalese handicraft. You
may get carved wooden items while at Patan. Besides handicrafts,
Nepal is also a good place for genuine luxury goods. With a host
of departmental stores and shopping plazas offering international
brand name products, Kathmandu has become a heaven for the serious
shopper. Browsers will enjoy the city's numerous traditional markets
that overflow with vegetables, fruits and other goods.
Permit for Trekking
Any foreigner intending to trek in any part of the kingdom of Nepal
shall have to obtain a trekking permit from the Department of Immigration,
Bhrikuti Mandap and permits are issued for trekking in any part
of the country except in areas restricted for the foreigners by
government regulation.
